Sister Simone Campbell will present Carleton College’s first convocation of 2014 on Friday, January 10 from 10:50 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel. Sister Campbell is a passionate advocate for working together to close the gap between rich and poor and to dismantle policies rooted in racism, greed and violence. Her presentation is free and open to the public. Convocations are also streamed live and can be viewed online at go.carleton.edu/convo/.

Sister Campbell is a religious leader, attorney, and poet with extensive experience in public policy and advocacy for systemic change. She currently serves as an executive director of NETWORK, a national social justice lobbying organization, which has for 40 years sought to educate, organize and lobby for economic and social transformation as part of a global movement for peace and justice.

During the 2010 congressional debate about healthcare reform, Sister Campbell wrote the famous "Nuns' Letter" supporting the reform bill, an action that was cited by many as critically important in passing the Affordable Care Act.  In 2012, she was also instrumental in organizing the "Nuns on the Bus" tour of nine states to oppose a budget that would decimate programs meant to help people in need. The tour received an avalanche of attention across the nation among religious communities, elected officials and the media.

Sister Campbell has made many appearances in the national and international media, including recent appearances on 60 Minutes, The Colbert Report, and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

She has received numerous awards, including the "Defender of Democracy Award" from the international Parliamentarians for Global Action and "Health Care Heroes Award" from Families USA. In addition, she has been the keynote or featured speaker at numerous large gatherings, including the 2012 Democratic National Convention.
