Faculty Recital to Showcase the Sounds of “Lonely Hearts and Free Spirits”

January 14, 2014

On Friday, Jan. 17 at 8 p.m. in the Concert Hall, Carleton music faculty will present “Lonely Hearts and Free Spirits,” a recital performed by Patricia Kent, soprano; Lawrence Weller, baritone; and Lara Bolton, piano. This event is free and open to the public.

The program will include songs by Austrian composer Franz Schubert and French composer Francis Poulenc, including his Banalities and Fetes Galantes. Also featured will be Twin Cities composer David Evan Thomas’ hilarious Lonely Hearts.

Kent, an adjunct instructor in voice at Carleton (also on the faculty of the College of St. Benedict (CSB) in St. Joseph, Minn., and St. John’s University (SJU) in Collegeville, Minn.), has performed in a variety of vocal roles throughout the central and eastern United States. She has performed in concert with the Duluth Superior Symphony, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the Minnesota Orchestra, and has also performed with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra as a soprano soloist. In 1999 Kent made her European debut in a London performance of Felix Mendelssohn’s “Elijah.” Kent has recorded an album of the music of Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn (with pianist Robert Koopmann) and an album of French chansons (with pianist Roderick Kettlewell). She is a graduate of CSB/SJU and the University of Minnesota.
