The Carleton Film Society, a student-run organization that promotes arthouse films, presents weekly public screenings on Saturday evenings at 4:30 p.m. in the Weitz Center for Creativity Cinema. Each film is preceded by an introduction from a Carleton professor or other guest speaker, and student-led discussions follow the screenings. Screenings are free and open to the public.

Jan. 25: “The Marriage of Maria Braun” (1979, Germany, directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder)
Considered to be Fassbinder’s most successful film, the story follows Maria, who marriage to the solider Hermann remained unfulfilled due to World War II and his post-war imprisonment. Maria adapts to the realities of post-war Germany and becomes the wealthy mistress of an industrialist, all the while staying true to her love for Hermann. The film is the first in Fassbinder’s BRD Trilogy, followed by “Veronika Voss” and “Lola.”
Feb. 1: “Rural Route Film Tour”
The Rural Route Film Festival makes a stop in Northfield, presenting innovative short films from rural locations that highlight unique people and places outside of the bustle of the big city. This screening will include a short film by assistant professor of cinema and media studies, Laska Jimsen. For more information, visit online at www.ruralroutefilms.com.
Feb. 8: “Hedgehog in the Fog” (1975, Russia, directed by Yurly Norshteyn)
A visually striking stop-motion animation film, that tells the story of a little hedgehog who goes to visit his friend the bear cub, and the adventures he encounters on his journey. In 2003, the film was ranked at #1 of the “All Time Animation Best 150 in Japan and Worldwide.”
The Film Society series is an example of the many public opportunities taking place in the Weitz Center for Creativity. Despite its population of around 20,000, Northfield had no public movie theater until the opening of the facility, and the new cinema has become a site for community engagement with film as well as being the center for cinema and media studies at Carleton College.
