Carleton College will host a special screening of the acclaimed documentary film, “The Girls In The Band,” on Tuesday, March 4 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Weitz Center for Creativity. The film tells the fascinating and inspiring stories of female jazz and big band instrumentalists and their groundbreaking journeys from the 1930s to present day. This event is free and open to the public.
A New York Times Critics' Pick, reporter Jeannette Catsoulis described the film as “Everything a worthwhile documentary should be, and then some: engaging, informative, thorough and brimming with delightful characters.”
Featuring musicians Roz Cron, Melba Liston, Marian McPartland and Clora Bryant, “The Girls In The Band” uncovers how these incredibly talented women endured sexism, racism and diminished opportunities for decades, yet continued to persevere, inspire and elevate their talents in a field that seldom welcomed them. Today, there is a new breed of gifted young women taking their rightful place in the world of jazz, which can no longer deny their talents.
Winner of multiple audience awards at film festivals around the globe, “The Girls In The Band” was also a 2011 1st runner-up for Best Documentary at the Vancouver Film Festival.
