Carleton College will hold its annual Honors Convocation on Friday, May 30 at 3 p.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel. A yearly celebration of faculty and student academic accomplishments and civic engagement, this year’s Honors Convocation address will be presented by Google Public Policy Analyst Hibah Hussain, Carleton Class of 2008.
A cherished annual tradition at Carleton, Honors Convocation begins and ends with a full academic procession, including emerti faculty. Following remarks by President Steven Poskanzer, Dean of the College Beverly Nagel and Dean of Students Hudlin Wagner, the ceremony will honor students and recipients of awards and grants. Honors Convocation is free and open to the public; the event will also be streamed live and archived for future viewing online at go.carleton.edu/convo/.
Hibah Hussain (www.hibahhussain.com) is public policy analyst at Google in Washington, D.C., having returned to Google after a two-year stint as policy analyst in the New America Foundation’s Open Technology Institute. Previously, Hussain worked as an account optimizer at Google, where she was heavily involved with the Google Grants program and won a Google Grants Basecamp Award for her work with non-profits. Hussain also spent time with the Berkman Center for Internet and Society and the BBC’s Washington Bureau.
Hussain received an MSc with Distinction from the London School of Economics and Political Science. While at LSE, she worked with POLIS, a journalism and society think tank, and was the inaugural winner of the Interaction London Research Prize, which is awarded to the LSE student with the best idea for applied new media research.
A member of the Carleton Class of 2008, as an undergraduate student Hussain was named to the Dean’s List, Phi Beta Kappa and Mortar Board, as well as being awarded a Mellon-Mays Undergraduate Fellowship, a Ruth Weimer Mount Fellowship, and Distinctions in both 1st Major and 1st Integrative Exercise.
