In collaboration with the Cannon Valley Elder Collegium (CVEC), Carleton College is pleased to host the third annual Northfield Film Festival, running Tuesday evenings during the month of July. This year's theme is "The Hollywood Renaissance" and will feature popular films from the 1960s and 1970s, including "Bonnie and Clyde," "The Graduate," "2001: A Space Odyssey," and "Chinatown." The series will also feature screenings of three short films created by area students—one each from Carleton, St. Olaf College, and Northfield High School.
Screenings are free and open to the public and will be held Tuesdays evenings at 7:30 p.m. in the Weitz Center for Creativity Cinema (Third and College Streets in Northfield).
July 8: "Bonnie and Clyde" (1967, 111 min.), directed by Arthur Penn and starring Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty. A somewhat romanticized account of the career of the notoriously violent bank robbing couple and their gang.
July 15: "The Graduate" (1967, 106 min.), directed by Mike Nichols and starring Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft. Recent college graduate Benjamin Braddock is trapped into an affair with Mrs. Robinson, who happens to be the wife of his father's business partner and then finds himself falling in love with her daughter, Elaine.
July 22: "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968, 160 min.), directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood. Humanity finds a mysterious, obviously artificial, object buried beneath the Lunar surface and, with the intelligent computer H.A.L. 9000, sets off on a quest.
July 29: "Chinatown" (1974, 130 min.), directed by Roman Polanski and starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway. A private detective hired to expose an adulterer finds himself caught up in a web of deceit, corruption and murder.
The morning after each screening, faculty experts will lead a seminar discussing the previous evening's film from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Weitz Center for Creativity.
