Kathryn Harper, a passionate advocate for the global empowerment of girls and women, will present Carleton College’s weekly convocation on Friday, May 1 from 10:50 to 11:50 a.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel.
Titled “Invest in Girls, Transform the World,” Harper’s presentation is free and open to the public. Carleton convocations are also recorded and archived online.
Harper is senior manager of external relations for Let Girls Lead, a global movement with a mission of improving the health, education, livelihoods, and rights of more than seven million girls. Let Girls Lead is invested in girls and their allies through advocacy, education, economic empowerment, and storytelling. In the face of poverty, violence, and discrimination, Let Girls Lead believes that girls are not victims, but are powerful leaders and inspiring agents of change. The movement asserts that investing in girls creates a catalytic effect that promotes gender equality, contributes to poverty reduction, and improves health outcomes. Statistics show that the global community fails to prioritize girls, with less than two cents of every dollar in international development funding going to programs supporting adolescent girls. Harper’s management of Let Girls Lead seeks to ensure that girls can attend school, stay healthy, and learn skills to escape poverty.
