Dr. W. Bruce Fye, a well-known cardiologist and expert on medical history, will present “The Origins and Evolution of the Mayo Clinic from 1864 to 1939: A Minnesota Family Practice Becomes an International ‘Medical Mecca’” on Saturday, Oct. 10 from 3 to 4 p.m. in Olin Hall Room 149 on the Carleton College campus. Emeritus Professor of Medicine and the History of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic, Fye’s presentation will focus on the evolution of the internationally acclaimed Mayo Clinic from its early years through 1939, the year that William J. (Will) and Charles H. (Charlie) Mayo died.

Fye obtained his undergraduate and medical degrees from Johns Hopkins University. During his time in Baltimore, he discovered his passion not only the field of cardiology, but for the study of medical history as well. At Johns Hopkins, he was able to combine these two interests into a clinical scholars program that ultimately led him to a Master's Degree in medical history. He then completed his internal medicine residency at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center.

After finishing his training in cardiology and medical history in 1978, Fye joined the staff at the central Wisconsin Marshfield Clinic, where he established the echocardiography program and was elected chief of cardiology nine times over the course of 18 years. In 1999, he made the decision to focus on his personal research in a more academic environment, thus leading him to his current position at the Mayo Clinic, where he combines his career interests in both cardiology and medical history.

Fye joined the Mayo Clinic in 2000 as a consultant in cardiology and professor of medicine and medical history.  Currently, Fye divides his time between clinical cardiology, echocardiography, and historical research and writing.  He also serves as medical director of the Mayo Clinic Center for Medical History.

The parent of two Carleton graduates (P’00, P’03), Fye’s appearance is part of the College’s annual Family Weekend.

Olin Hall is located on the Carleton campus off First and Nevada Streets in Northfield. Street, between Nevada and First Street. This event is sponsored by College Communications.
