Carleton’s Symphony Band presents HOT!

May 10, 2016

The Carleton Symphony Band will present a program titled HOT!, featuring some of the “hottest” band music and compositions of our time, on Friday, May 13 at 8 p.m. in the Concert Hall.

Symphony Band director Claire Larson explains, “In the ‘band world,’ works by Grainger, Holst, and Sousa helped to form and define the band ensemble in the late 1800’s. Today’s 21st century composers and styles have greatly evolved the wind band from our British and military roots. This concert will feature some of today’s hottest band composers and their unique compositional styles.” Audiences will enjoy music from Frank Ticheli, David Maslanka, Samuel Hazo, Andrew Boysen Jr. and more.

A visiting instructor in music, Larson serves as director of bands at Kenyon Wanamingo Middle and High schools, where she conducts four bands, a jazz band, marching and pep band. Larson earned a Masters of Arts in music education, magna cum laude, from the University of Minnesota and a Bachelors of Music, cum laude, from St. Olaf College.

This event is sponsored by the Carleton College Department of Music. For more information, including disability accommodations, call (507) 222-4475. The Concert Hall is located on First Street, between Winona and Nevada Streets, in Northfield.
