Renowned Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra to perform at Carleton College

January 13, 2017

Friday, Jan. 20, Carleton College is pleased to present a free performance by the renowned Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. Conducted by Mischa Santora and joined by acclaimed piano soloist Jonathan Biss, the SPCO will perform classic selections by Beethoven and Ravel, along with the world premiere of a newly composed piece by British composer Sally Beamish.

This not-to-be-missed concert will take place from 8 to 9:30 p.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel and is free and open to the public.

Celebrated pianist Jonathan Biss (www.jonathanbiss.com) joins the SPCO for the second installment in the SPCO’s Beethoven/5 project, a major commissioning project pairing newly composed piano concertos alongside the Beethoven concertos that inspired them. Beethoven’s lively Piano Concerto No. 1 is the subject of this concert, performed alongside the world premiere of a concerto by British composer Sally Beamish. The program begins with Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin (The Tomb of Couperin), which pays tribute to the golden age of French music and the baroque composer François Couperin, as well as the composer’s friends who died during World War I.

Now in its 58th season, The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra (SPCO) is widely regarded as one of the finest chamber orchestras in the world. In collaboration with a team of artistic partners, its virtuoso musicians present more than 130 concerts and educational programs each year, and are regularly heard on public radio’s Performance Today, which reaches 1.3 million listeners each week on 289 stations, and SymphonyCast, which reaches 250,000 listeners each week on 143 stations nationwide.
