Acclaimed Progressive Jazz Trio to Perform at Carleton College

June 18, 2007

Acclaimed progressive jazz trio The Bad Plus will perform in concert Friday, June 22 at 8 p.m. in the Carleton College Concert Hall, along with opening act Rob Curto’s Forró for All. Sponsored by Northfield’s ArtOrg, the evening concludes with a post-concert party celebrating the Summer Solstice at ArtOrg’s Moving Walls Gallery. Admission to the concert and party is $18.

The Bad Plus is a critically-acclaimed progressive jazz trio composed of pianist Ethan Iverson, bassist Reid Anderson, and drummer Dave King. Known worldwide for their energetic live performances and musically intuitive collaborations, The Bad Plus has a reputation for stretching the boundaries that define modern jazz.

The Los Angeles Times hails The Bad Plus “among the potential leaders of what might be called the Nu Jazz movement—an eclectically blended, acoustically framed, dynamically powerful variation on mainstream jazz.” Their sound often defies categorization and draws from diverse and unlikely sources. “We’ll try almost anything,” says Anderson, “as long as it makes good music.” Billboard magazine calls their latest release, Prog, “a gourmet 10-course meal of the sublime, the rowdy, and the eclectic. Easily the most likeable and listenable jazz album of 2007.”

The Bad Plus comes to Northfield in the midst of the European leg of their current world tour. Opening the concert is Rob Curto’s Forró for All, a band dedicated to the sound of Northeast Brazil’s forró pé de serra, blending the sounds of accordian, mandolin, triangle, and zabumba with driving rhythms and intricate melodies.

Following the concert, ticket holders are invited to gather at ArtOrg’s Moving Walls Gallery at 200 Division Street in Northfield for the opening of ArtOrg’s Summer Solstice Exhibit, featuring the work of artists Cristina Maria O’Brien, Kari Alberg, Xavier Tavera, Jenny Schmid, and others, including Cloud Cult band member and painter Scott West. The Bad Plus will be on hand to sign copies of their CDs and refreshments will be served.
