The Uninvited Company Presents Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest”

July 11, 2007

The Uninvited Company (UNCO), a group of Carleton College students who produce and perform plays for the Northfield community throughout the summer, will present “The Importance of Being Earnest” at 8 p.m. on July 19, 20, and 21. Admission is $8 for adults and $6 for students and senior citizens.

“The Importance of Being Earnest” is a comedy about mistaken identity set in English high society in the 1890s, fixating on the manners and morals of the pretentious and the manor-born. With wit and wisdom, it tells the tale of two young men who have taken to bending the truth in order to add a dash of excitement to their lives. One has invented an imaginary brother, Earnest, whom he uses as an excuse to escape from his dull home in the country and frolic in town. The other uses a similar technique, only in reverse: His imaginary friend, Bunbury, provides a convenient and frequent method of taking adventures in the country. However, their deceptions eventually cross paths, resulting in a series of crises that threaten to spoil their romantic pursuits. Considered to be one of Wilde’s best works, UNCO’s production of “Earnest” is being directed by Karen Borchert ’08 (Duluth, Minn.).

UNCO has been producing and performing plays for more than 30 years on the campus of Carleton College. Carleton’s Arena Theater is located at the corner of East Second and Nevada Streets. Tickets are available at the door and can be reserved online at uncoinfo@gmail.com. For more information and disability accommodations, visit UNCO’s website at http://orgs.carleton.edu/UNCO/.
