Carleton to Host Reading/Discussion of Acclaimed Guide to Enlightenment

April 3, 2008
By Esther Pak '09

Za Rinpoche and Ashley Nebelsieck, co-authors of the acclaimed self-help book “The Backdoor to Enlightenment: Shortcuts to Happiness for the Spiritually Challenged,” will read from and sign copies of the book on Monday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Language and Dining Center (LDC). This event is free and open to the public.

“The Backdoor to Enlightenment” (Three Leaves, 2008) is a clear, step-by-step guide to revealing the secrets of enlightenment, something that has remained enigmatic and inaccessible in the far-away depths of the Himalayas except to the most dedicated seekers. Both witty and informative, the book combines ancient texts with contemporary wisdom, enabling readers of all faiths to discover a “backdoor” to the promise of a daily and lasting peace.

Rinpoche is a Tibetan monk who first came to the world’s attention when his life story was chronicled in the first chapter of Po Bronson’s megabestseller, “What Should I Do with My Life?” While growing up in a refugee camp in Southern India, he was recognized by the Dalai Lama as the sixth reincarnation of the ZaChoeje Rinpoche. He is the founder of the Emaho Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Scottsdale, Arizona, dedicated to sharing Tibetan culture with the West, supporting humanitarian projects, and assisting with personal spiritual development. Rinpoche teaches throughout the world, while maintaining his obligations as the spiritual leader to many monks.

Nebelsieck is an author and adventurer. She studied art history and religious studies at Arizona State University, and travels all over the world checking out sacred sites—from the Vatican, to the pyramids at Giza, to Callenish in the Outer Hebrides, to Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and countless others. She currently lives and writes in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Copies of “The Backdoor to Enlightenment” will be available for purchase at the event at a 20% discount. Copies are also being sold in advance of the event at the Carleton Bookstore at the discounted price.
