Adrienne Falcón ’90 Named Coordinator of Academic Civic Engagement

June 9, 2008

The Dean of the College Office has named Adrienne Falcón Coordinator of Academic Civic Engagement at the College. This new position was created in recognition of the need for increased support for Carleton faculty seeking to do civic engagement activities in their classrooms. In addition to supporting faculty in their projects, Falcón will help increase the visibility of academic civic engagement at Carleton by closely partnering with ACT (Acting in the Community Together), other offices on campus, and the broader Northfield community.

Falcón has worked as a community organizer for the Minnesota Environmental Partnership; as an independent community planner in Northern Minnesota; and as Youth Development Director for Alternatives, Inc. in Chicago, the largest youth and mental health services center on the north side of Chicago. She has served on the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation, the Northeast Minnesota Sustainable Development Partnership Board, the Minnesota Hispanic Learners Task Force, and a statewide network of Latino leaders for the Spanish-Speaking Affairs Council of the State of Minnesota. She has also taught at Nay Ah Shing tribal school for the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe.

Most recently, Falcón has been an instructor of sociology at Carleton, focusing on urban sociology, sociology of youth and community organizations, environmental sociology and ethnography of Latin America.

Falcón is a 1990 magna cum laude graduate of Carleton, earning a bachelor’s degree in Latin American studies. She received her ABD from the University of Chicago. Falcón began her new position April 1, 2008.
