The Carleton Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combos, led by director David Singley, will present their Fall Concert at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 29 in the Concert Hall. The evening’s program will include compositions by Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, Horace Silver and Gerry Mulligan, as well as music from the library of the Count Basie Big Band. The event is free and open to the public.

A group selected by auditions, the Jazz Ensemble presents a formal concert each term, in addition to periodic tours and various special engagements. The repertoire is chosen from important composers in the jazz band repertoire such as Basie, Kenton and Ellington, as well as contemporary jazz band compositions. Published works and original student compositions and arrangements are played at each formal concert.

Singley, who is also lecturer in jazz guitar at Carleton, received his B.M. from the Berklee College of Music and his M.M. from Indiana University. Singley is a prominent figure in both the jazz and the pop world, with a large array of performing credits including Debbie Reynolds, Gene Pitney, Bob Brookmeyer and Bob Mintzer, among many others. He has performed in the orchestras for numerous Broadway shows such as “The Lion King,” “Chicago,” “Hairspray” and “A Chorus Line.” Singley also has performed with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra and the Minnesota Opera Company. He has been published as a jazz composer, arranger and recorded as a performer in over a dozen CD’s. His 1997 solo CD is titled “How My Heart Sings.”
