Carleton’s Acclaimed Chinese Music Ensemble to Perform in Concert

The Carleton Chinese Music Ensemble, under the direction of renowned musician and composer Gao Hong, will perform on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 3:00 p.m. in the Concert Hall on the Carleton College campus. This event is free and open to the public. 

This unique musical group performs throughout the year at various campus events including Carleton’s international festival, Chinese New Year celebration and gallery openings. The ensemble also performs at the Northfield High School, where Gao Hong teaches a Chinese language class. Audiences in the Twin Cities have also had the chance to enjoy Carleton’s Chinese Music Ensemble thanks to performances at the Chinese Minghua Language School in St. Paul, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and at the Mall of America, where the group was invited especially at the invitation of the Chinese Heritage Foundation.

Members of the Chinese Music Ensemble include seniors Hannah Button-Harrison (Ames, Iowa) on the guzheng, Mandie Grover (Pleasant Grove, Utah) on the erhu, Leo Hummel (Seattle) on the zhongruan, Ava Navasero (Singapore) on the dizi, and Shao Min Tan (Singapore) and Yuanpu Wang (China), both on the erhu; juniors Kim Bauer (Olympia, Wash.) on the erhu, Saewon Eum (Republic of Korea) on cello, Yonas Hailu (Denver) on piano and percussion, and Gabriel Keller (Mendota Heights, Minn.) on the zhongruan; sophomore Soon Kai Poh (Singapore) on the guzheng; and first year students Yawen Chen (China) on the dizi, Tantuo Xu (China) on the erhu, and Xue Yang (China) on the guqin;  along with Guanlu Guan (on piano and erhu) from St. Olaf College.

Dice, a world-renowned composer and pipa player, began performing at age 12 and later graduated with honors from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. She has earned numerous recognition awards, including first prize in the Hebei Professional Young Music Performers Competition, a Bush Artist Fellowship, and an Asian Pacific Award. Dice has performed throughout Europe, Australia, China, and the United States in solo concerts and with symphony orchestras.
