Visiting Artists Lecture Series Brings Painter, Writer Clarence Morgan to Carleton

January 6, 2012

Carleton is pleased to present painter and writer Clarence Morgan on Tuesday, Jan. 10 as part of the Christopher U. Light Lectureship in the Arts. Morgan will speak about his work from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m. in the Boliou Hall Auditorium. This event is free and open to the public.

Future appearances as part of this ongoing series include artists Carolyn Swiszcz (Jan. 24) and Michael Karekan (Feb. 14).

Morgan is a painter, lecturer and occasional writer who resides in Minneapolis. He has spent his career exploring the range of possibilities of abstract painting, from early work focused on gestural markmaking to more recent hard-edged, high-contrast abstractions that address issues of order and chaos. His newer work demonstrates the variety that can develop from the repetition of a few basic forms.

Morgan has exhibited his work nationally and internationally. Solo and group exhibitions include the Beijing Film Academy Gallery, Reeves Contemporary (New York), Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), James Madison University, Sawhill Gallery (Virginia), Romo Gallery (Atlanta), Gallery Joe (Philadelphia), York College of Pennsylvania, eo art lab (Connecticut), Harwood Museum of Art (New Mexico), David Lusk Gallery (Memphis), Kidder Smith (Boston), Thomas Barry Fine Art (Minneapolis), Rosenberg Kaufman Fine Art (New York), Palmer Art Museum (Pennsylvania), Art in General (New York).

He received his MFA from the University of Pennsylvania in 1978 and a four-year certificate from the Pennsylvania Academy of The Fine Arts in 1975. Grants include a Bush Foundation Artist Fellowship, McKnight Foundation Artist Fellowship, Jerome Foundation Travel and Study Grant, Minnesota State Arts Board Grant, North Carolina Arts Council Visual Artist Fellowship, Southern Arts Federation NEA Regional Fellowship, a grant from Art Matters, Inc.

Morgan's work is included in the collections of the Cleveland Art Museum, Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis Art Institute, General Mills, and University of Alabama, among others. Morgan is a member of the faculty in the Department of Art at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, where he is a professor and former chair of the department.
