Carleton Presents “A Mid-Winter’s Journey,” Featuring The Carleton Choir and Minnesota Choral Artists, The Singers”

Carleton College will present “A Mid-Winter’s Journey,” a choral celebration featuring the Carleton Choir and Minnesota choral artists, The Singers. “A Mid-Winter’s Journey” will feature musical selections reflecting on life’s love, loss, and healing.  This concert will be Saturday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Carleton Concert Hall and is free and open to the public.

Joining the Carleton Choir, under the direction of Lawrence Burnett, will be the acclaimed Minnesota choral ensemble, The Singers. Conducted by founding artistic director Matthew Culloton, The Singers organization is dedicated to giving world-class performances of the finest choral literature. The Singers exists to serve as artists, educators, and ambassadors of the choral art. The Singers has premiered and commissioned over fifty new works by composers Stephen Paulus, Abbie Betinis, Jocelyn Hagen, Joshua Shank and Craig Carnahan.

In 2006, The Singers sang for the National Federation of Music Clubs and the Minnesota chapter of the American Choral Directors Association. In 2008, The Singers performed at the ACDA North Central Division Convention, the American Guild of Organists National Convention, and shared the stage with the Harvard Glee Club. In 2010, The Singers performed a collaboration concert at the ACDA North Central Convention under the baton of Craig Hella Johnson. In March 2011, The Singers performed at the National Convention of the American Choral Directors Association in Chicago.

Culloton holds degrees from Concordia College (B.M.) and the University of Minnesota (M.M. and D.M.A.).  Aside from his duties with The Singers, Matthew is Choirmaster at House of Hope Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. He is also an adjunct faculty member at the University of Saint Thomas, teaching in the Graduate Music Program.

In 2004, Matthew received the MN ACDA Outstanding Young Choral Conductor of the Year Award. In 2003, he received the VocalEssence/ACDA of Minnesota Creative Programming Award.   He has been commissioned to compose for the Dale Warland Singers, Choral Arts Ensemble of Rochester, and the MMEA All-State Choir.
