Brother John, from the ecumenical Christian Taize community in France, will visit Carleton College and present a talk about the Taize community movement on Wed., April 25, at 7:30 p.m., in the Skinner Memorial Chapel sanctuary. Brother John will then give a reflection during the College's regular weekly Taize Vespers service at 8:30pm. All are welcome to his talk and to the vespers service of singing, prayer, scripture reading, and silence.
The Taizé Community is an ecumenical monastic order in Taizé, Saône-et-Loire, Burgundy, France. It is composed of about one hundred brothers, from Protestant and Catholic traditions, who originate from about thirty countries across the world. The monastic order has a strong devotion to peace and justice through prayer and meditation. It was founded in 1940 by Brother Roger Schutz, a Protestant. The community has become one of the world's most important sites of Christian pilgrimage. Over 100,000 young people from around the world make pilgrimages to Taizé each year for prayer, Bible study, sharing, and communal work. The Taize community of France is making a pilgrimage to Chicago at the end of May, with a culminating event hosted by DePaul University. The gathering, designed for young adults aged between 18 and 35, will take place in Chicago May 25 to 28, 2012 (Memorial Day Weekend). The gathering is part of Taize’s "Pilgrimage of Trust on Earth" which began more than thirty years ago. The aim of the pilgrimage is to foster trust and reconciliation in today’s world. A recent European stage that ended on 1st January 2012 brought together 30,000 young adults from all over Europe in Berlin, Germany.
