Nina Olsen, senior lecturer in clarinet at Carleton College, will commemorate more than 20 years as a member of the Minnesota Opera Orchestra with a musical performance at Carleton College. The performance, entitled “The Voice and the Clarinet,” will present a variety of works in collaboration with soprano Mary Laymon and pianist Mary Jo Gothmann. The performance will take place at 8:00 p.m. in the Concert Hall on Friday, May 4. This special event is free and open to the public.
The 90-minute performance will present a range of works from multiple time periods, including Italian flautist Donato Lovreglio’s “Fantasy on ‘La Traviata.’” Other works in the program include noted American composer Ned Rorem’s “Ariel,” a musical setting of the poetry of Sylvia Plath.
Olsen, who has studied at the University of Denver, the University of Michigan, and the University of Minnesota, is a veteran clarinetist who has performed with several local groups. In addition to the Minnesota Opera Orchestra, Olsen has performed with the Minnesota Sinfonia, the Duluth-Superior Symphony, and Thursday Musical. Along with being a member of the Carleton College faculty, Olsen is chair of the Winds, Brass and Percussion Department at the MacPhail Center for the Arts in Minneapolis.
