Ronald Henkoff ‘76, editor of the award-winning monthly magazine Bloomberg Markets and an executive editor at Bloomberg News, will present Carleton College’s weekly convocation on Friday, Jan. 11. Henkoff’s presentation, entitled “Money, Power and Trust,” will look at how the economy has been affected by scandals within financial institutions. Convocation is held from 10:50-11:50 a.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel, and is free and open to the public. Henkoff, who has edited Bloomberg Markets since 1999, has over three decades of experience in business journalism. Before coming to Bloomberg in 1998 (then as global features editor at Bloomberg News), Henkoff worked at Fortune magazine for ten years as Chicago bureau chief and a member of the editorial board. He had previously worked for Newsweek from New York, Houston and London and served as the magazine’s European economics editor from 1984 to 1988. A 1976 graduate of Carleton College, Henkoff holds master’s degrees from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
Bloomberg Markets (founded in 1992 as Bloomberg) bills itself as the world’s leading financial magazine, with 375,000 readers in 150 countries, and covers financial news and markets as part of the Bloomberg mass media corporation. Henkoff has worked to bolster Bloomberg Markets’ long-form feature writing, which the magazine had not previously emphasized. During Henkoff’s tenure as editor, Bloomberg Markets has won numerous journalism awards, including the George Polk Award, the Overseas Press Club of America award, the Gerald Loeb Award, the Society of American Business Editors and Writers’ award and the Foreign Press Association award. In 2011 Bloomberg Markets was also a finalist for a National Magazine Award for General Excellence, and was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in the National Reporting category for coverage of life insurance companies that retained death benefits owed to families of military veterans and other Americans, leading to government investigations and remedial changes. Henkoff himself has won the Minard Prize for excellence in editing and has received two awards from the Overseas Press Club of America for his reporting from abroad.
