Dufford '14 Awarded Udall Scholarship

Northfield, Minn.—Carleton College student Courtney Dufford ‘14 (Stockton, Ill.) has been selected as one of 50 Udall Scholarship winners.

Dufford, a political science and environmental studies major, was selected by a 14-member independent review committee who picked this year's group of Udall Scholars on the basis of commitment to careers in the environment, Native American health care, or tribal public policy; leadership potential; academic achievement; and record of public service.

This highly qualified class of Udall Scholars was selected from 488 candidates nominated by 230 colleges and universities. Forty-two Scholars intend to pursue careers related to the environment. Four Native American/Alaska Native Scholars intend to pursue careers related to tribal public policy; four Native American/Alaska Native Scholars intend to pursue careers related to health care.

Each scholarship provides up to $5,000 for the Scholar’s junior or senior year. Since the first awards in 1996, the Udall Foundation has awarded 1,364 scholarships totaling $6,820,000.

The 2013 Udall Scholars will assemble August 7-11, 2013, in Tucson, Ariz., to receive their awards and meet policymakers and community leaders in environmental fields, tribal health care, and governance.
