Richard Mosse: Debris, North Kivu, Eastern Congo

February 5, 2014

Kodak Aerochrome, a discontinued film developed for military reconnaissance, registers an invisible spectrum of infrared light, rendering the green African landscape in vivid hues of lavender, crimson, and hot pink.

Richard Mosse chooses this medium to create images simultaneously real and surreal, alluding to the complicated stories embedded in the eastern Congo. Commencing in 1996, the Congo wars have embroiled eight African nations, at least 25 armed groups, and killed over 5.4 million people.
