The Intersection of Book, Film and Visual Narrative

September 20–November 10, 2013 • Kaemmer Family Gallery

DirectedDirected, curated by Jeff Rathermel of the Minnesota Center for Book Arts, explores the common territory of two vibrant artistic media: book arts and film. Both dedicated to storytelling and visual sequencing, book artists and filmmakers share techniques. This exhibition, featuring works by more than 30 artists, presents “bookish” films, conceptual art works, animated typography, new twists on documentary, and lots of artistic borrowing and transformation.

Directed, the exhibition, debuted at the MCBA last spring and summer. At Carleton, this presentation of inventive and interactive books, videos and other compelling objects connects to curricular offerings in Cinema and Media Studies, and in studio arts.

Artists in the exhibition include John Akre, John Baldessari, Max Ernst, Jim Goldberg, William Kentridge, Heidi Neilson, Edson Oda, Ed Ruscha, Clarissa Sligh, Barbara Tetenbaum, Andy Warhol, Philip Zimmermann, Janet Zweig and many others.
