Stipends
Stipends, Expenses, and Supplementary Funding
The NEH provides a stipend of $3,900 to each summer seminar scholar, all of which is paid out prior to the start of the seminar. Participants are responsible for the costs of transportation to and from Rome as well as living and accommodation expenses. Current round trip air transportation between the United States and Italy tends to cost between $1500 and $2000, depending on point of origin.
Participants should make sure that they have adequate medical and accident insurance effective overseas.
Although the stipend is designed to offset many of the costs of participation, it will be less than what is needed to completely cover them. The NEH does not supplement the $3900 stipend if expenses exceed it.
Applicants are encouraged to apply to their institution for supplemental funding to meet the full potential costs at the same time as they apply for the Summer Seminar.
The NEH stipend is regarded as taxable income but many of the expenses of the trip (transportation, room, lodging, research materials) may be deductible.
