IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT AIR CONDITIONING
Applicants should note that there is no air conditioning at the American Academy in Rome, the American University in Rome, or in most public buildings in Rome. As stated earlier, July in Rome can be very hot and humid.
The NEH neither encourages nor discourages participants from bringing family members with them, but those who do so are required to be responsible for their own housing arrangements. The AAR may be able to accommodate accompanying spouses or partners, at an additional cost, depending on the availability of space, but it is unable to provide accommodations for those participants accompanied by children. Participants wishing to be accompanied by children should make alternative arrangements for housing in Rome.
Food
The American Academy in Rome is home to the Rome Sustainable Food Project (RSFP). Developed for the Academy by Alice Waters, the RSFP takes the pursuit of seasonal, sustainable, and nutritious food as central to its philosophy. The menus are inspired by the seasonal and organic produce of local farmers and the cooking techniques of Rome and Lazio. Since its launch in 2007, the Rome Sustainable Food Project has transformed the community of the AAR with a collaborative dining program that nourishes and supports both work and conviviality. The RSFP provides lunch and dinner at the AAR Monday through Friday and lunch is also provided on Saturday. The cost of meals is €14.90 for lunch and €26.50 for dinner.
The Seminar will sponsor one group dinner each week (on Thursday) and one group lunch to allow Seminar Participants to continue conversations with each other and visiting speakers.
Accounting Matters
Each participant will receive a bill itemizing charges for rooms, meals, phone calls and other incidental expenses. The current rate of exchange (November 2013) is approximately €1.00 equal $1.37.
