A Carleton College professor’s project has been launched into an orbit that may last for billions of years. Joel Weisberg, the Herman and Gertrude Mosier Stark Professor of Physics and Astronomy and the Natural Sciences, created a time map that is attached to EchoStar XVI, which launched from a pad in Kazakhstan on Tuesday, Nov. 20 into outer space. The artifact will remain in the Earth’s geosynchronous orbit in virtual perpetuity.

Culminating a trimester’s worth of intensive study, eleven Carleton College philosophy students led a public presentation last Wednesday, Nov. 7 at Northfield’s Just Food Coop highlighting their findings on the humane treatment of farm animals. The students have been taking a course entitled “Animal Ethics: The Moral Status of Animals,” taught by visiting professor Sarah Jansen, which examines different ethical theories when pondering whether humans have a moral obligation toward non-human animals.

The popular Ebony II dance show was as flashy and exciting as ever this fall with sparkles and spandex galore! Most of all, it was filled with impressive moves choreographed and danced entirely by students. Student photographer, Maria Kjellstrand was on hand to capture the event.

This year, homecoming weekend meant not only a plethora of athletic events, but also music, dancing, and great fun. Despite being under construction as a part of the Evans renovation, The Cave still provided great music, kicking off the weekend with a concert at the Grand in downtown Northfield. The concert featured the band, Javelin. Photographer, Nina Shapiro was on site to capture the event.

Using Storify, a new social media platform that allows other social media elements to be used in a story, follow along as the class of 2016 moves to Carleton and participates in New Student Week. The story includes tweets from New Student Week leaders, incoming students, photos of the week, as well as a YouTube video of move-in day.

Studio art majors presented their comprehensive exercise work in an exhibition in the Perlman Teaching Museum in the Weitz Center for Creativity. The show celebrated 19 students' works created in sculpture, painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, metals, photography, and installation. Student photographer, Abigail Han was on hand to capture the event.
