Statement from Carleton, St. Olaf, and the City of Northfield

The presidents of Carleton College and St. Olaf College and the mayor of the City of Northfield have issued a joint statement on their commitment to a welcoming and inclusive community.

This week, we saw hatred take center stage in another community that hosts an institution of higher education. Events in Charlottesville understandably raise fears about the safety of community members here.

We proudly and unequivocally affirm that in Northfield, and on our campuses, we value every member of our community, and that we are committed to providing a welcoming and inclusive community for all.  We believe in the worth of all people, and we will not tolerate behavior that incites violence or intentionally spews hatred and bigotry.

With the new academic year set to begin, we encourage the entire community to welcome and support students, reach out to neighbors, and remain vigilant in addressing the well-being of all who call this place home.
