Photo Feature: Hoar Frost, January 19, 2010

On Tuesday, January 19, 2010, the Carleton campus awoke to the scene of the entire campus painted white following a hoar frost. According to a post on, a hoar frost (also called a radiation frost or hoarfrost) "refers to the white ice crystals, loosely deposited on the ground or exposed objects, that form on cold clear nights when heat losses into the open skies cause objects to become colder than the surrounding air."
