The 2019 Carleton Open Committee

The Carleton Open started in September 1996 as the “Casey Jarchow Memorial Golf Outing”. Alumni such as Jack ’49 and Jinny ’48 Thurnblad, Phil Zrimsek ’87, Jon Nicholson ’58, Jep Knox ’48, Frank Wright ’50, Ray Asp ’50, Bill Huyck ’53 and others organized the first one with Alumni Office support as a tribute to former Carleton Dean and Coach Casey Jarchow who had passed away a few years earlier. Casey came to Carleton in September of 1946 as Dean of Men, incurring quite a challenge as the west (men’s) side of campus exploded with returning service men enrolled via the GI Bill®. Casey was a golfer, Carleton golf team coach, a true bon vivant and a great friend to the many who knew him either as students, colleagues, or members of the Northfield golfing community. Thanks in large part to the efforts of Bill Beck ’50 and his interest in broadening alumni participation in this event, the date and name changed to June and “Carleton Open” respectively, to make it the opening event of Reunion weekend.
