Book Talk: "Sexual Citizens" with Dr. Jennifer Hirsch

Thu, May 6, 2021 • 12:30pm - 1:30pm (1h) • Zoom

Author Dr. Jennifer Hirsch (Columbia University) will be virtually visiting campus to discuss her recent book, 'Sexual Citizens: A Landmark Study of Sex, Power, and Assault on Campus.' Framing sexual assault as a public health problem and drawing on testimonies of over 150 Columbia students who participated in the Sexual Health Initiative to Foster Transformation (SHIFT) study, this book explores our understanding of sexual assault on college campuses. The authors present an entirely new framework that emphasizes sexual assault’s social roots—transcending current debates about consent, predators in a “hunting ground,” and the dangers of hooking up. Through the powerful concepts of “sexual projects,” “sexual citizenship,” and “sexual geographies,” the authors offer a new and widely-accessible language for understanding the forces that shape young people’s sexual relationships and offers a roadmap for how to address sexual assault on campuses. Register here to attend the event.

Sexual Citizens contains explicit descriptions of sexual assaults and the moderated discussion of the research and the book will include similar details. The conversation may be difficult for some audience members.

This event is sponsored by Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Response (SMPR) and Distinguished Women Visitors

This event will be recorded.
