  • 1 in 3 women in the U.S. will have an abortion by age 45.
  • There are ~ 6 million pregnancies per year in the U.S., of which 67% end in birth and 18% end in abortion.
  • The estimated rate of miscarriage is 15% to 20% in women who know they are pregnant, but as many as half of all fertilized eggs may spontaneously abort, often before the women realize they are pregnant.
  • ~ 1.06 million abortions occur per year in the U.S.
  • 89% of all abortions occur within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy (first-trimester abortion).
  • 61% of all abortions are to women with one or more children.
  • 45% of of all pregnancies among U.S. women in 2011 were unintended, and about four in 10 of these were terminated by abortion.

 Safety Facts:

  • Abortion is safer than continuing a pregnancy and giving birth.
  • There is a 1-3% chance of minor complications such as infection, cervical tear or retained blood tissue.
  • There is a less than 1% (less than 0.05% chance for first-trimester abortions) chance of major complications.
  • Having one or more abortions does not affect your ability to become pregnant in the future.
