MPIRG is an organization that empowers students to make change happen in politics. We work with a statewide network of students and a professional staff to organize campaigns on the issues we choose, whether on a state, local, or campus level. Our goal is to pass legislation that will make our community and our world a more sustainable and more just place. It's an ambitious goal, but it's not just empty talk: students working with MPIRG has a 40-year record of getting stuff done on the issues we care about.

We've got a lot of big plans for this term, but we're always open to new ideas. MPIRG is a very flexible organization, and we can work on practically any issue you care about. So come on by, and let's get started!

Some of the things we've done this year:

  • registered over 300 Carleton students to vote in Minnesota
  • hosted educational events on human trafficking and on sulfide mining in northern Minnesota
  • organized a Candidate Forum featuring nine candidates running for state and local offices in last fall's elections
  • brought our state senator and representative to campus for a town hall meeting
  • collected hundreds of petition signatures to stop sulfide mining and to regulate greenhouse gas emissions

Some of the things we're working on right now:

  • real local campaigns to pass policies that will make Northfield and Rice County more environmentally sustainable: mandatory business recycling and organic farming conversion incentives
  • a documentary film about what happens to our compost and recycling after it leaves Carleton
  • an anti-oppression training
  • protecting the rights of students to vote in Minnesota
  • gearing up for the MPIRG Issues and Actions conference, where MPIRG's statewide campaigns are chosen each year
