03/31/2010 - Minutes

Hey all!

Thanks to everyone who came out for tonight's meeting (in Willis! crazy!) We talked about what was (or wasn't) sustainable about our spring breaks. Think on that if you didn't come and make a pledge to do (or not do) what you did this spring break for next spring break.

1) 2010 Student Sustainability Film Festival call for entries!
Make a short film about projects your community/college has done to promote sustainability (wind turbine, alternative transportation, waste reduction in dining halls). The prize is a $1000 cash prize and films are due

May 14

. Complete rules and submission guidelines are available at: nwisc.com/programs/student_sustainability_film/

2) Go to the MN Clean Energy Forum!
Focus the Nation & The Will Steger Foundation are sponsoring the MN Clean Energy Forum on April 10th. Join elected officials, business leaders, and community leaders to create a roadmap for Minnesota’s Clean Energy Future. Entrance (and lunch) are free, and attendees will have the opportunity to dialogue with policy-makers, scientists, and businesses at the forefront of the new Clean Energy economy that is sweeping the nation. Contact Christa Owens (owensc) for more info or transportation.

3) Next week is BRING A FRIEND NIGHT at SOPE!
As much as we love everyone who comes to our meetings on a regular basis, we'd like to see some new faces! That is why next week (second week) is the annual SOPE Bring-A-Friend Night. Bring yourself and your friends (doesn't matter if you come regularly or not -- we'd love to have you!) for a great night of ice cream and environmentalism and some really cool projects we're hoping to get off the ground. We're going to talk about the new recycling policy, the green bikes program, Earth week and maybe even show a short movie. Also, Ray is offering an unknown prize to the person who brings the most friends. So perhaps it should be called "SOPE Bring-Lots-Of-Friends Night." See you there!!!

This term, we're going with three task forces. We've got the Sustainability Revolving Fund task force, which is working on finishing up the low flow shower head proposal and maybe working on a new one. PEAR (Publicity, Education, Awareness, Recruitment) is teaming up with the Earth Week task force to plan a lot of great events for Earth Week (which will be fourth week -- more on Earth week later!). Finally, there will be a Green Bikes task force to get that wonderful program back on its feet (or wheels).

If any of these task forces sound interesting to you (or if there is something you want to do that we haven't started work on), it's not too late to come join SOPE and help out with these great projects!

See you all next Wednesday in Sayles 251 at 9 p.m. for SOPE Bring-A-Friend Night!!!
