Every winter, the Sustainability Office hosts Climate Action Week to highlight sustainability efforts on our campus, reach broader audiences than usual, and rally support for environmental causes. Throughout the week, there will be daily events, discussions, and more! This year, our week will focus on the intersections of sustainability and environmental justice. 

No Impact Challenge

Back by popular demand, it's time to weigh your waste! Sign up as a team or individual to compete in the No Impact Challenge by carrying around a bright green bag and collecting waste as you produce it! Faculty, staff, and students are all encouraged to participate. Sponsored by the Environmental Advisory Committee and the Sustainability Office. 

Career Center 30 Minutes

Students can sign up for one-on-one half hour informational interviews with alumni/parents to learn about their career paths.  Reserve your 30 Minutes in the Tunnel. There will be 3 different alumns with experience in environmental fields:

Eating Home in a Changing World: Environmental Food Justice in Native American Communities

Food justice and food sovereignty for Native communities requires a clean and stable environment, on land in contaminated by industry, mining, or oil, in a climate predictable to traditional crops and other food sources. For many tribes, the first major climate change was as a result of forced relocations, followed now by industrials induced changes. Drawing on examples of contemporary Indigenous food sovereignty projects from across the US, this presentation will  discuss the ways in which Native people are working to reclaim and maintain traditional foods; efforts to “rematriate” heirloom seed varieties from institutions and readapt them to their current homelands; and the ways in which the food sovereignty movement and anti-extractive industry movement have come together to protect land from damaging industries that will impact traditional foods.

Environmental Justice Workshop with Kim Smith and SEED

Curious about environmental justice? Want to engage in conversation with peers about its role on campus and influence in our lives? This event is for you! Kim Smith will provide an introduction to the topic which will serve as a shared context in which a facilitated SEED discussion will occur. Learn from academics and lived experience all in one event!

Trivia Night (Hosted by ECO)

Wednesday 2/19 at 9pm at the Cave

Think you know a thing or two about the environment and climate change? Put your skills to the test and join us for climate trivia night at the Cave! Categories will include all types of environmental-related questions including climate change, policy, history, pop culture, science, etc. Prizes will include freshly baked homemade bread!

The trivia will be table-against-table, with teams of up to 6 people per table. No pre-registration is required. Doors at 8:30, trivia will begin at 9. BYOB 21+!

The Promise of Justice: A Walk With Others

Friday 2/21 6:00 am in Sayles

This durational performance will investigate what it means to listen closely to and cultivate care with/in environments: for humans and non-humans both close at hand and seemingly distant. Walking together for twelve hours in the Sayles-complex area, Ben Capp and Malin Palani welcome your participation and invite you to walk with them for whatever length you desire. The performance will begin and end with a discussion open to all.
