Conference Sustainability

Carleton College prides itself on its sustainability efforts, and the UMACS conference is no different! Some sustainability highlights:

  • The UMACS Conference is a zero-landfill event. Everything given to attendees is reusable, recyclable, or compostable.
  • There will be no printed materials given to conference attendees. Instead, attendees are encouraged to bookmark the conference website on their laptop or mobile device. The schedule will also be posted at each presentation session room.
  • Carleton's electricity is about 50% powered by our two wind turbines, both directly from Wind Turbine 2 and by RECs from Wind Turbine 1.
  • The bathrooms in the conference venue have dual-flush capabilities. Flip the handle up for liquids and down for solids to conserve water.
  • The Weitz Center for Creativity is LEED Gold certified. Can you see where we utilized the old structure (a middle school) throughout the facility?
  • Our social hour on Friday evening is completely vegetarian, reducing our carbon footprint by not providing meat-based products.
  • For Saturday's meals, we will be eating in Burton Dining Hall. This reduced labor, set up, and food waste by utilizing an existing system. Enjoy a variety of local, vegetarian, and vegan foods that meet everyone's dietary needs.
  • The conference center (and most buildings on campus) have a water-bottle filling station to reduce plastic bottle use. Bring your own drinking container to fill up!

Thank you for doing your part!
