Knights Tie for 16th at U.S. Collegiate Championships

PALO ALTO, Calif. – The 2010 season wrapped up for the Carleton College synchronized swimming team this weekend at the U.S. Collegiate Championships. The Knights tied for 16th out of 21 teams, ranking ahead of squads from institutions such as Boston University, Colorado State University, and Penn State University.

The event—held at at the Avery Aquatics Center on the campus of Stanford University—marked the 34th national championships, which are an open-class meet, combining competition from NCAA Divisions I, II, and III and NAIA colleges and universities.

Ohio State University tallied 96.0 points to win its 26th synchro championship. Stanford University was second at 82.0 points followed by Canisius College and the University of the Incarnate Word, which tied for third place with 72.0 points.

On the first day of action, Stephanie Moberg (Sr./Scottsdale, Ariz./North Canyon) was Carleton’s lone entrant in the solo competition. She finished 24th of 34 athletes during the semifinals with a score of 66.750. The top 12 advanced to Saturday’s finals.

Moberg and Libby Nachman (So./Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) comprised the Knights’ top performers at the duet competition, placing 16th out of 33 pairings with a  score of 66.000. Megan Brant (Fy./West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) and Kathleen Storey (So./Havertown, Pa./Haverford Township) finished 22nd at 58.500.

The first day of competition concluded with Brant, Nachman, and Storey posting a score of 57.375 in the trio competition, which placed the group 20th out of 24 entrants.

Friday’s action featured the A, B, C, and D technical competitions as well as the team semifinal, where the Brant, Jixiu Li (So./Shenyang, China/Northeast Yucai), Moberg, Lizzie Murphy (So./Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani), Nachman, and Storey finish 19th with a score of 62.500.

All six team members that traveled to the national championships took part in the “Figures” portion of the competition.

Nachman had the top Carleton placement in this segment of the championships as she finished 10th after scoring 54.318 points in “D” figures, bettering Moberg’s 15th-place showing in the C Figures with 59.690 points. Murphy (20th), Li (24th), Brant (25th), and Storey (27th) also competed in D Figures.

The Knights did not have any competitors in action on Saturday.
