Hometown: Phoenix
Major: Political science/international relations
Sport: Track and field (triple jump and long jump)

Accolades: Carleton record holder for indoor triple jump (11.07 meters) and outdoor triple jump (11.50 meters); second in triple jump at the 2015 MIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships and third at the 2015 MIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships; All-MIAC Honorable Mention three times

Favorite training exercise: “Plyometrics, which are really fast, repetitive movements like squat jumps, box jumps, or bleacher running. I like explosive movement. It’s tiring, but it’s also energizing.”

Mental exercise: “Triple jump is all about technique: making sure your body is in the right position. I watch videos of myself and other triple jumpers. I even stayed up until 4:00 a.m. to watch the world championships live-streaming from China. I work with Carleton’s jumps coach, Erik Diley, who asks me how I think I can improve. It’s like class: the professor will give you the right answer, but only after you have analyzed things and tried to get there on your own.”

New terrain: “In high school you improve linearly, but [at the college level] improvement looks more like hills and valleys. I had to adjust to the fact that I’m taking care of myself now, eating and sleeping differently, and experiencing different stresses. My first winter season here, I did worse than I ever had. My teammates helped me—they said they had gone through the same thing—and that spring, I achieved a personal best. That showed me that I can do this.”

Finish line: “I hope to break my outdoor record before I graduate. We have a young team, but we’re mighty. We put up a fight and hold our own.”
