"We have met future governors"

Gifty Amos Nwankwo ’19 (above), a psychology and cross-cultural studies major from Sugarland, Texas, delivered an inspiring speech at Carleton’s 145th commencement ceremony in June. Here is an excerpt.

“Mommy, you told me that it is not the superficial things that earn you a place at the table, but what is inside. When I felt inadequate at Carleton and was afraid to walk into classes, you would say, ‘Gifty, walk into that class with confidence, shoulders back, head up, for you have not been given a spirit of fear.’ And those of you who know me know that I do, in fact, walk into every room just like that.”

“Sometime within the last four years, we have all come in contact with a great Carl, one who has seen something in us, challenged us, or supported us. We have formed relationships that were vital to our Carleton career. We have met future governors, debated with future lawyers, and glanced at future presidents. Cherish and nurture all who enter your life.”
