The Last Frontier

Carleton students partnered with the Philadelphia-based Pig Iron Theatre Company, an award-winning troupe that specializes in creating innovative original works, to write and perform The Heart Is the Last Frontier last winter.

The play explores how technological inventions shape human relationships through three melodramas: an American father waiting by the TV for news of his son in Vietnam, a 16th-century king asking a clockmaker to create a robot to automate his prayers, and parents in a hospital who are struggling to separate the sound of their son’s heartbeat from that of the machine that mechanizes its rhythm.
