Visitors to Antarctica aren’t permitted to approach wildlife, but “sitting and sketching often piqued penguins’ curiosity,” says Maria Coryell-Martin ’04, who was an artist-in-residence with Quark Expeditions on an adventure cruise to Antarctica in 2008. In this photo, taken on Petermann Island in the Antarctic Peninsula, a gentoo penguin observes her artistry. Coryell-Martin, who shares her passion for conscientious environmental action through her art, has risked frostbite and falling into a glacial abyss to capture her images.
