If feminism has indeed lost some of its vitality in the Carleton community, “Faces of Feminism” [summer] is a symptom of why. By focusing on matters of representation among the most elite strata of society, the article ignores current issues that demand a feminist perspective. The college majors that command the highest lifetime salaries are the male-dominated fields of engineering and economics, while social work and elementary education majors, mostly women, struggle to make a living wage; The Ugly Truth, a movie that would have been considered sexist in the ’50s, is on screens nationwide; and, most disturbingly, in Pittsburgh there’s been another mass killing of women, [who were] targeted just for being women. Feminism is needed as much, right now and right here, as it ever has been.
