Helping Hand

IBC-Weitz-Mendicant-Jan-Senn.jpgA little mendicant has taken up residence in a niche outside the cinema in the Weitz Center for Creativity. Inspired by statues of saints found in church niches, Sebastian Bouknight ’14 (Cos Cob, Conn.) created the 25-inch monk for art professor Stephen Mohring’s fall term seminar, Sculpture: Form and Context, during which students created works of art for sites they selected around the Weitz Center.

“Originally his bowl was filled with Altoids for people to take, but once it had been emptied, a generous passerby gave him a coin, and others have helped increase his fortune to about 60 cents,” says Bouknight, who doesn’t know how long the mendicant will remain in his spot. “I imagine he’ll be there as long as he needs to be.”
