The technique of radiocarbon dating has allowed archeologists, art historians, art dealers, geologists, and climate researchers to address many exciting questions. Dating is now possible with very small samples, which has allowed investigation of valuable objects of great interest, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Shroud of Turin. Important art works now must have radiocarbon dates before they are sold. Is it authentic or is it a fake? Carleton alums, parents, friends and current students are invited to come to this program and find out how to tell.
Dr. Jull is a senior research scientist with the Department of Geosciences, University of Arizona and is director of the NSF Arizona Accelerator MassSpectrometry Facility. He obtained his B.Sc. in chemistry from the University of British Columbia and a Ph.D. in geochemistry from the University of Bristol. His did postdoctoral research at the University of Cambridge and the Max-Planck-Institut für Chemie in Mainz, Germany. He is the editor of the journal Radiocarbon and also of the journal Meteoritics and Planetary Science.
