Five Signs of Spring at Carleton

April 22, 2006 at 4:29 pm

1. Tepee Time

When the cold steel posts for the Bald Spot rink are taken down, the tepee goes up. Sitting dandy between Boliou and Olin, the tepee is a spot to sit and chat or hang out in after parties.

2. Mai-fete island is more popular than the Libe on Wednesday nights.

An island plus a bonfire plus Dixie cups galore is where it's at when the mid-week blues set in. The seniors host it every year and students from every class go to socialize and get their noses out of books.

3. Petals fall instead of snow

Carleton lives up to its “school full of hippies” status when the campus turns into a mini-arb. With the Cannon River freely flowing again, flower blossoms, baby bunnies and green, green grass make their way into every corner of Carleton's landscape. This often persuades professors to hold classes outside. No wonder hardly anyone studies off-campus in the Spring.

4. Trays are traded in for frisbees

The rule is: Once the ice thaws, the frisbees start flying. Even on coolest of afternoons people are seen across campus sporting flip-flops with frisbees in their unmittened hands.

5. Every weekend is a BIG weekend

Carleton traditions are all over the map when spring rolls around. The massive musical production is always a hit, plus the Superhero Party, the Battle of the Bands, the 24 Hour Theater Show, Rotblatt, Spring Concert and other springtime staples.
