The Closing

May 22, 2006 at 3:30 pm

I.

She stopped
breathing when

the world tipped
sideways and

white petals poured
forth unto
an ash-tundra
dimmed with stars.

II.

To never see
or hear

black pearls
tumble

clink. clink.

into a porcelain
jar painted
as pieces

crumbling. cracking.

makes her mind
remember.

III.

Forward mirrors
will reflect

a silver lake.
glassy slivers.

ice hidden and
cushioned by
snow grains

as pervasive as
the salt

in her eyes.

IV.

When she stopped
breathing

the world
fell silent and

white petals
wilted on top
an ash-tundra

curled. crinkled.

in peace.
