REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates)

REU are research programs for undergraduates funded by the National Science Foundation. These programs take places in universities and other research institutes, and typically provide students with a stipend. They are mostly during the summer and the exact list of REU sites and research areas changed every year. Visit the REU Sites in Engineering page on NSF for the current list of REU programs.

Other Research Opportunities

If the lab that you want to work in do not host a REU program, you can still contact them asking if they would like to hire a research assistant over the summer. These positions may be unpaid, but they will be very helpful when you apply to graduate schools or laboratory related jobs in the future. You can also ask your professors here at Carleton for references. Connections are as helpful as a strong recommendation letter in getting you a summer research position. In addition to labs in the universities and colleges, you can also look at the national laboratories around the countries for summer research opportunities.
