Carleton Announces Fred Cooper '58 Endowed Scholarship

October 31, 2013

Northfield, Minn.––Carleton College has announced the formation of the Fred Cooper ’58 Endowed Scholarship in support of financial aid.

Made possible by a $1 million gift from the Abe and Ida Cooper Foundation, the money is intended to provide financial aid to one or more Carleton students who demonstrate financial need.

Fred Cooper, a political science major during his time at Carleton, owned Continental Distributing Company in Illinois, a business started by his father, Abe, in 1933. Cooper valued the liberal arts education he received at Carleton, and the gift reflects his lifelong love of learning. He passed away in April 2011.

“Fred always spoke highly of the education he received at Carleton and the lifelong friendships he made there. Helping others to achieve this would have delighted him,” said Arthur Callistein, trustee for the Cooper Foundation.
