Rob Rothblatt, Carleton Class of 1983 and lead architect at AECOM, will speak about designing the new sustainable arena for the Sacramento Kings basketball team on Thursday, April 24 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Weitz Center for Creativity Larson Meeting Room (236). Entitled “Sacramento Kings: A Sustainable NBA Arena for the Endless Frontier,” Rothblatt’s presentation is free and open to the public.

The need for a new arena for the Kings arose when the owners of the team decided that the only way the team would stay in Sacramento, California, was if a new arena was built by 2017. AECOM is the global architecture firm hired to design the new downtown arena. The $448 million project is expected to be a “game-changer for sports arena design,” Rothblatt said in a recent interview with Fox 40.
The design, says Rothblatt, prioritizes sustainability, and will have full LEED certification. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is one of the most used and recognized set of standards for sustainability and the efficiency of the utilities in the buildings. The Carleton College Weitz Center for Creativity is certified LEED Gold.
A member of the Carleton Class of 1983, Rothblatt is the recipient of a BA in philosophy. He earned an MA in 1987 from the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation.
