Carleton presents North Indian Musical Guest Artists, Red Baraat

October 24, 2014

Carleton College is pleased to present a not-to-be-missed appearance by critically acclaimed and very popular music pioneers, Red Baraat. The event takes place on Sunday, Nov. 2 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Carleton Concert Hall.

Internationally renowned for their fusion of Indian Bhangra music with eclectic world sounds, Red Baraat is the first and only dhol ‘n’ brass band of its kind in the United States, melding the infectious North Indian rhythm Bhangra with elements of brass funk, jazz, go-go and hip-hop—expressing the human spirit through improvisation and a powerful live sound.

Formed in 2008, the eight-piece band hails from Brooklyn, New York. Conceived by drummer Sunny Jain, the group has garnered worldwide praise for singular sound and ability to instill joy and unity in all people with their incredibly uplifting music. Red Baraat’s spirit is worn brightly on its sweaty and hard-worked sleeve, as they visit cities all over the globe, spreading the magic of their powerful live performances. Says Jain, “We are simple creatures that desire community. If we can unite people of all backgrounds and ethnicities to partake in the exuberance of life through the universal language of music, then life is that much sweeter.”

Red Baraat has been invited to play at The White House and were handpicked to close the London 2012 Paralympic Games in the center of Trafalgar Square.

Red Baraat first wowed Twin Cities audiences in 2011 as part of the Cedar Cultural Center’s Global Roots Festival. The band returned to even greater acclaim, performing to a sold-out audience in 2013. In September 2014, Red Baraat sold out The Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis. Their rare Northfield appearance is not-to-be-missed! More at www.redbaraat.com.
